SAR at Prestwick โ the big picture
What you see from the fence
Spend a few hours spotting at Prestwick and you'll eventually see a big bright-red-and-white Sikorsky S-92 helicopter lift off, or land back on its pad on the western side of the field. That's Coastguard SAR. It's the aircraft that goes when somebody on a Scottish mountain, a Clyde fishing boat, or a stranded cliff walker needs to come home alive.
The present-day service
UK civilian search-and-rescue is run by HM Coastguard, and the helicopters are flown on their behalf by Bristow Helicopters under a long-term contract (took over from the RAF/Royal Navy in 2015).
Prestwick hosts one of Bristow's UK SAR bases, covering:
- The Firth of Clyde and the west of Scotland
- The southern Hebrides and the Argyll coast
- The southern Uplands, the Galloway coast, and well into the Irish Sea
- Backfill for other UK bases when they're already tasked
The crew is on 15-minute readiness day and night, 365 days a year.
The aircraft
- Sikorsky S-92A โ two crew, two rear crew (winch operator + winch paramedic), hoist, FLIR camera, full IFR/night capability, 570+ NM range
- Civilian callsign "Rescue 199" at Prestwick
- Bright red-and-white colour scheme so you can see them from miles away
Why here?
- Weather tolerance โ Prestwick's runway and apron handle 24h ops in almost any weather Scotland throws at it
- Geographic centre of the Clyde SAR region โ short transit times to the busiest callout zones
- Legacy infrastructure โ the site has been an aviation rescue hub for decades (see the next lesson on HMS Gannet)
- Prestwick ATC โ sits next door, smooth deconflict with civil traffic
What to listen for
SAR traffic usually works Prestwick Tower for departures. You'll sometimes hear them declare something like "Rescue 199 airborne, tasking to [location], souls on board four". That's your cue to look up โ a job is on.
The next lesson is the story of HMS Gannet, the Royal Navy air station that ran SAR out of Prestwick from the Cold War until 2016, and the transition to the civilian service.
