Best spotting spots around EGPK
1. The Mound (south of 30 threshold)
Classic. Elevated view over threshold 30, landings come overhead. Best afternoon (sun behind you on a 30 landing). Parking is on the verge โ tight.
2. Monkton Park / Sandhill Road
North of 12 threshold. Good for 12 departures pulling up over you. Morning light ideal.
3. Newton-on-Ayr sea wall
Distant but striking โ frames aircraft against the Firth of Clyde. Long lens required (300 mm minimum).
4. The fence by Adamton House
East side, good for 21 arrivals when the crosswind runway is in use.
What about the terminal?
Prestwick does not have a public viewing gallery โ the old one closed years ago and was never reopened. The terminal itself is airside-only for ticketed passengers, so unless you're flying that day, stay fence-side.
Etiquette
- Don't park in passing places or on grass verges that block farm access
- No flash photography
- Don't climb fences โ EGPK is a designated airport under the Aviation Security Act; trespass is a serious offence
- Be polite to police โ they do sweep, especially during military movements
What's legal
Photography from public property is legal. See the separate lesson on Air band listening & UK law for the (sometimes surprising) radio rules.
